The older I get, the more concerned I get about my skin, especially on my face. I’m not very inclined to use new products unless I’m just unhappy with what I’m using. I feel like I never know how my skin will react to something in a new product and I rarely like to take that chance. So of course, I wanted to ask my panel of beauty bloggers what products they use on their own faces. It’s like asking the doctor what he/she would do. Let’s see what they recommend:
As a beauty blogger, makeup artist, and a beauty junkie in general, I’m always trying out new products and lines in search of the next best thing. So as you can imagine, there are tons of different products that fill up my bathroom cabinets, but there are definitely certain go-to products that I swear by and quite frankly wouldn’t be able to live without.
For cleansers, I learned once from a derm spa that the main purpose of a cleanser is to get all of your makeup off. But for me, I also like to look for cleansers that don’t dry out my skin. There is a Korean beauty brand called The Face Shop that’s entered the U.S. market several years back and I was thrilled because I’ve been using their foaming cleansers for years. It’s extremely affordable and easy on the skin — I particularly love the White Tree Snow Exfoliating Foam Cleanser (similar: Rice Water Bright Cleansing Oil + Foam) with micro-exfoliating beads.
Clarins Double Serum has been a life-changer ever since I started using this product in April. The texture, tone and overall quality of my skin seems to have improved after one week of using this serum. No joke. People even started to comment on my “glowing” skin and I have to say it’s all thanks to this miracle in a bottle! Twenty plant extracts does your skin good.
I’ve been using eye cream since I was 18 years old. It’s just something my mom’s instilled in me since my early college years and can I just say, moms know best. Thank you, mom! I can’t image life without eye cream. The hydration under my eyes is addicting. For several years, my favorite eye cream was Bobbi Brown’s Hydrating Eye Cream, but after a while it was time to move on. I started using Shiseido’s White Lucent Eye Cream last spring, when I went on a little Duty Free shopping spree in Tokyo, and it’s been working well for me. It targets dark circles and apparently after getting a skin assessment in Korea last year, that was an area I needed to focus on.
With the colder seasons ahead, I think it’s important to change up your skincare routine. One thing I love using on my face during colder months are face oils. I especially am a fan of argan oil because it really hydrates and restores my parched skin, giving the overall tone and elasticity an uplift without making me break out (I swear). If you’re willing to splurge a little, Josie Maran’s Argan Oil is an extremely popular choice. I personally think if it’s 100% argan oil, you can’t really go wrong, especially if it’s from Morocco, so I went with a brand from Whole Foods Market, Acure Argan Oil, and it worked just fine for me!
One last thing I’m obsessed with: face mists. For a while, I was the queen of collecting different face mists. I think I was rotating between five different brands but of those 5, my favorite can’t-live-without brand is Tatcha, a San Francisco based beauty company. Their face mist is simply the best. I spray it throughout the day if my skin needs a little somethin-somethin, but I also spray it on before I go to sleep! I also use this as a setting spray on my brides when I do wedding makeup and all my clients love the way the mist feels, the way it give them a hydrating glow and the way it smells! Another plus is their gorgeous packaging—pretty packaging always gets me.
The perfect moisturizer and a few drops of oil will do ya! I’m a huge fan of face oils as they are usually free from fillers. May Lindstrom’s The Youth Dew is worth the investment, and contains a wonderful and nourishing blend of oils to hydrate and soothe.
I’m digging this gentle cleanser from fresh. It doesn’t strip or foam, but takes off makeup and leaves my skin balanced.
I adore exfoliation. It’s so essential to a healthy looking complexion. This glycolic treatment is perfect for once a week use to start, and removes dead skin, targeting texture (think scars and wrinkles), and boosts collagen at the same time.
Healing, balancing, and a major radiance booster, I love to use this correcting masque once a week to deeply nourish and detoxify.
There are nights when I’m feeling lazy and remove my makeup with a pre-moistened towelette but when I like to relax and take my time (probably the better option), I use this award-winning Eve Lom Cleanser & Muslin Cloth that decongests, exfoliates, and removes even the most waterproof mascara you will ever wear. The Muslin Cloth you soak in hot water helps open up your pores allows the aromatic oils to cleanse your skin and its impurities.
I love this Alchimie Forever Gentle Refining Scrub so much that I wish I could use it every day of the week—but that’s not good practice. The blend of the cranberry beads, jojoba pearls and papaya extract smells amazing and works effectively that leaves my skin feeling brighter and cleaner.
For those early wake-up calls, this Clinique All About Eyes Serum Rollerball is the perfect pick-me-up to help de-puff tired eyes. Sometimes I put this in the fridge for 15-20 minutes for an extra chilly application.
Once or twice a week I replenish my skin with this GlamGlow Thirsty Mud Hydrating Treatment for a super glowy complexion. It’s a gooey caramel-looking formula but it works wonders. You can use it as a daytime mask that you leave on for 10-20 minutes or as an overnight mask.
While I typically stick to a gentle cream or milk cleanser in the morning, I am addicted to oil cleansing at night. Oils remove all of the dirt and grime from the day without stripping the skin. My current favorite is de Mamiel Restorative Cleansing Balm — a luscious blend of soothing oils and butters that smells like heaven!
Say what you will about toners, but I couldn’t live without a facial mist. I liberally spritz my skin before and after applying oils, balms, and makeup. These days I can’t seem to put down my beautiful bottle of May Lindstrom The Jasmine Garden. This wonder mist fuses cacao with jasmine to create an indescribably fantastic treasure.
A potent, hardworking serum is the cornerstone of any effective skincare ritual. Seek out those with active ingredients that actually transform the skin. Avoid fluff. As the summer is drawing to a close, I’m beginning to notice an increase in hyperpigmentation and I find myself reaching for Odacite A Summer in Hossegor every night. Organic papaya seed oil fades brown spots, while antioxidant-rich blueberry seed oil boosts brightness.
Moisturizer really does not get the respect that it deserves. A good moisturizer hydrates, protects, and seals in your oils and serums. Additionally, it smooths dry flakes creating the perfect base for makeup. For daytime, I love Laurel Facial Balm: Transform Daily — it provides instant radiance with the added bonus of plant-based SPF!
I disagree with conventional wisdom that says we should limit exfoliation to 1-3 times per week. I think that different skin types require a different amount of exfoliation. If you have oily, acne prone skin, you might find that exfoliating every day is the perfect vehicle for keeping those pores clear. For dryer skin types, less really is more. I like to follow my nightly oil cleansing ritual with de Mamiel Brightening Cleanse & Exfoliate. I reach for it whenever my skin is looking dull or congested!
Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser – I just started using Sunday Riley skin care and I’m smitten with this cleanser. It’s foaming and is a perfect mate for my Clarisonic. It has French clay to degunk and has a spicy sexy kick from black pepper, sandalwood, jasmine and frankincense – which all have major benefits for skin.
Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask – My skin glows after a single layer of this. It works like a peel by getting deep into your pores to break up dead skin and revitalize your skin texture but is so gentle. I use this religiously once a week.
Fig + Yarrow Facial Scrub – It’s therapeutic to massage this gritty scrub onto my face. It is a mix of your garden and kitchen – oats, herbs, minerals, honey and floral essence. I leave it on for a few extra minutes before rinsing because it just feels so darn good.
Indie Lee Blemish Stick – I don’t normally call acne treatments chic but hey, there’s a first for everything! And, it’s spot-on in this case. This convenient tube looks like a lip gloss but is actually any zit’s worst nightmare.
Kyrpis Antioxidant Dew – I started mixing a few drops of this magical vitamin botanical boost to my beauty oils for a custom serum. It just amps up everything I’m using that much more. It’s also incredibly beautiful and makes me happy every time I look at the bottle.
Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Cleanser — This gel cleansing formula gets below the surface of your skin fast. I don’t have to use an eye makeup remover, it’s a one-stop-shop for removing all dirt and oil from the day. I start my day off with this and start my nighttime routine with it, as well.
Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips — Sometimes getting rid of black heads and white heads takes a product that pays attention to those details. This strip gets deep into those pores to unclog them and you can visibly see the results right away. I enjoy doing this after my cleansing step in my nighttime routine.
Origins “A Perfect World for Eyes” Eye Treatment — The eyes are a really sensitive area, this is a very gentle serum that firms, eliminates dark circles, and smooths the appearance of fine lines instantly. I always have to put this on before my makeup in order for it to look good around my eye area.
Trilane Anti-Aging Face Moisturizer — My dry skin loves this stuff. It doesn’t feel greasy on the skin and it gives a beautiful hydrated finish. I use this as the first step to hydrate my clients’ skin before makeup and they all love it. It’s a universal moisturizer that only needs a little bit to do the job.
Lush Grease Lightening Spot Cleanser — If you have blemishes or acne spots, this is the right kind of product to have on your counter. It is focused on tackling those problem areas with reliable ingredients like tea tree oil, thyme, and rosemary!
