Challenge and Controversy

Being Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I thought it apt to let one of my favorite quotes by him inspire the subject of this post.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

Instead of taking the obvious political derivation from this today I’m going to take it in another direction. A personal life direction that every single person can relate to.

Because we all have challenge and controversy in our lives that we deal with. Life is hard. And sometimes you don’t expect the challenges that come, and they tend to come when you are least expecting them.

It’s like the sayings that go:

It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” Epictetus

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” Charles R. Swindoll

Everything we are all going through is completely different, yet very much the same. You never know what is going on in someone’s life. How you treat someone in even the smallest interaction can make a huge difference to them.

So simply by being kind, being patient, being calm and caring, going out of our way to be thoughtful to do things for others or say something nice (a text, an email, a phone call, stopping someone on the street) — can really change the direction of someone’s day, alter their mindset.

Especially when things are hard, it’s even more important for us to go the extra mile.
