I’ve gone through a bit of a change recently. I’ve been inching toward it for a few years but with our recent move it’s been on another level. I’ve been waking up really early.
I’ve always been a night owl and a light sleeper. The light sleeper thing I can’t do much about, and the night owl thing never surprised me because my dad’s parents were huge night owls. Even into their 80s they would be up until midnight or later every night! My grandpa would read books for hours in his big chair.
Growing up I always had problems falling asleep. I was always the last one to fall asleep, but then I was also never the last to wake up. I’ve never been one to sleep in really late in general. But I’ve also never been an early morning person on the regular.
The weird thing is, I’ve always wanted to be an early morning person, but was never — I’m not sure what the word is here, motivated? — enough for it. I had no reason to rise any earlier than I did. And for the last 7 years, I’ve worked for myself, so I never had to get up super early for anything besides a photo shoot or an early flight every once in a while. I think sleep is really important for your health, so I just figured my body would wake up when it was ready.
So when I started naturally waking up early, I was pretty excited about it. Then I got a dog and once he gets up, well there’s just no more sleeping. Although I think he’s a teenager at heart — loves to sleep in! Now I’m getting up and he won’t even follow me, he just hops in bed with my husband and keeps sleeping.
Ever since we moved to our new place, at first I just chalked it up to all the new sounds (we live close to the train/metro), and the birds get up really fucking early and I can hear them allllllllll. We also only have sheer white curtains in our bedroom, so with the sun coming up around 5:30-6:00 am I’m up right along with it. The light combined with the noise wakes me up. Sometimes a weird dream will wake me up and then there’s just no recovering.
So lately I’ve been waking up early, but just staying in bed. Either getting on my phone (Instagram & email), or picking my book back up and reading. But sometimes I just get up. Our house is old with creaky wood floors so I hate to get up and be noisy — although my husband can sleep through just about anything and says he never hears me get up!
This morning I woke around 4 am. I tried to go back to sleep for a while, got on my phone for a while, then I just got out of bed around 5:30 am. I’m thinking this might be my new norm. Getting out of bed really early. I always wanted to be the person that got up really early and worked out and was home and showered by 7 or 8. Maybe that’s my new phase in life? I’m figuring out my new morning routine. Since we moved it’s been so different I haven’t figured it out yet.
But basically I haven’t used an alarm in 7 years (don’t hate me), and now I just naturally wake up really early. With the sun and the damn birds. I think getting my beauty sleep is important so now I just try to get in bed earlier knowing I’m going to wake up early regardless.
I’m sure those of you who are parents are like, honey, you don’t even KNOW.
I want to know about you. What time do you get up and why? Do you want to get up at the time you do or would you rather sleep later or get up earlier? Do you have a hard time getting up? Has your wake up time changed? I’m so curious! Please tell me in the comments!
